Sara’s Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Journey

Sara has been attending the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme with Xyla Health & Wellbeing and has seen some amazing changes since starting her journey. She has been happy to share with us some of her experiences and results.

What was your life before the programme?

I work from home and spend a lot of time sitting at the laptop. I have a dog but used to get my children to walk her as much as possible. I had no energy. Daily, I was taking 4 metformin tablets.  I would graze throughout the day, not particularly paying attention to what I was eating. I have a sweet tooth so would usually eat chocolate in some form, at least once a day.

How did you hear about the programme?

The Diabetic Nurse at my GP surgery sent me a text message to say I met the criteria. I was keen to try and lose weight and reverse the diabetes because I was feeling so rubbish!

What has been your journey on the programme?

I am a single mum of two teenagers. I have a ferocious sausage dog and not much spare time.

I welcomed the opportunity to be a part of the programme and the other participants in the group have been encouraging and supportive. My coach is very knowledgeable and gives great advice.

The first stage was easier for me because I had a routine. I have found willpower that I never knew I had!

I now have much more energy and enthusiasm to do things. I make a point of walking the dog myself and joined a Zumba class. I have always loved cooking but couldn’t be bothered to cook from scratch but now I love trying new recipes. My children don’t love my experiments so much – but some of them are delicious! As a result, they are eating a lot healthier too. They love having a mum with more energy and less moaning.

My family and friends have been extremely supportive and encouraging throughout my whole journey. I could see the sugar levels improving and as I began to feel better it spurred me on to achieve even better results.

How has the programme improved your health and your life?

I feel so much healthier and happier since being a part of the programme. I’ve lost nearly 24kg so far and dropped 4 dress sizes. I stopped all diabetes medication. My blood test results indicate that I have put the diabetes into remission! I enjoy walking the dog, and don’t feel lethargic at all now. I have had so many compliments; it’s improved my self-esteem.

Fun fact – I have been wing walking as a treat to myself as I’ve completed the programme. I have always wanted to do it but never been able to because of my weight. Now I have the perfect opportunity to mark it off my bucket list! It’s been an incentive to carry on, even when I’ve had days when I haven’t wanted to, and it’s a reward that I’ll never forget!

Are there any other comments you would like to make about the programme?

Having the group sessions and support has helped me above anything. I would recommend the programme to everyone. It’s an amazing opportunity that I have been lucky enough to have been given.

I would advise new starters to stick with it. You need to take one day at a time. It has transformed my life, which in turn has had such a positive impact on my family.

What positive advice could you give to motivate those currently on the programme?

The end results make it all worthwhile because you’ll feel so much healthier and happier.
