NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme

The NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme is a new, innovative and FREE service for people with Type 2 diabetes.

How does the programme work?

First, we’ll help you to kickstart your weight loss over 12 weeks with a low-calorie diet (shakes and soups).

After this, we’ll use a carefully managed plan to reintroduce healthy, nutritious food into your diet and focus on movement and maintaining a new healthy lifestyle.

Throughout the programme you will be fully-supported and monitored by expert clinicians and coaches to make sure you have everything you need to develop and maintain a healthy new lifestyle.

We will work together over 12 months, and the support you will receive during this time will include:

  • An initial one-to-one assessment
  • 20 sessions with your Health & Wellbeing diabetes practitioner
  • 39 online support modules
  • A final one-to-one assessment

What is Type 2 diabetes remission?

Remission in people with Type 2 diabetes means that your blood sugar levels are no longer in the range for diabetes, without needing to take any diabetes medication.

Research from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), and the Doctor Referral of Overweight People to Low Energy total diet replacement Treatment (DROPLET), tells us that remission is most likely to be achievable closer to your diagnosis – and is strongly linked to weight loss.

Some people call this reversing Type 2 diabetes, but we prefer the term ‘remission’ because your Type 2 diabetes can come back.

There’s no guarantee you will reach remission as the research so far suggests that it isn’t possible for everyone. However, there are many other benefits to losing extra weight. If you adhere to the programme you can expect to lose ~10% of your starting weight or more.
