Timothy’s NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme Journey

Timothy has been attending the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme with Xyla Health & Wellbeing and has seen some amazing changes since starting his journey. He has been happy to share with us some of his experiences and results.

Could you please tell me about your experience on the programme so far? How did you hear about the programme and who referred you?

I had to phone up for my diabetic assessment and the usual woman was away, the lady who was covering suggested a new trial, she put forward my details and it went from there.

In the beginning I did struggle, but the thing that spurred me on was the initial weight loss which made me go “wow”. It really gave me a boost. I could have fallen by the wayside as it was really tough, but this really kept me going. I got into a routine and thought about what I needed. Our meetings helped me out so much. If I was on my own, I really don’t think I would have made it this far. The goal setting was key for my success. Rob’s (my Diabetes Practioner) support has been imperative in keeping me focused.

What challenges did you face? And how did you overcome them?

Weakness in my energy and work pressure as it is very demanding. But the focus on the bigger picture and keeping these check ins was the way I pushed through.

What went well?

The weight loss is the biggest thing for me. Once I got through the initial feeling of being hungry it was good. Not seeing people during the pandemic then seeing them after a significant period of time was a real shock to them because of how much I have physically changed. I’m sleeping better and feeling better too.

Did you find the plan easy to follow?

Yes. It’s structured to 4 meals a day and you can work out when it’s best for you to take them.

Did you feel supported throughout the process from your initial assessment to attending the sessions?

Yes, very much so.

How has the programme changed your life?

Just feeling better physically and mentally. I feel I’m getting stronger by the day.

Would you recommend the programme to others?

Yes. I do believe it really helps if you’re in an environment that supports you. Simply, the programme, is brilliant.

What advice would you give to a Service User who is just getting started?

Choose your start time carefully, start a few days before work to give you a chance to get going. Maybe even take a few days off to give yourself a buffer week when starting. Talk to friends and family so they understand what you are doing. Plan when you are going to have your meals for when it suits you.

Do you mind sharing your results? If so, what has the improvement been?

I’m 15 weeks into the programme and I’ve lost 18 kgs with 4 more kilos to achieve my goal, which I am absolutely chuffed about.
