Sharon’s Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme Journey
Sharon, from Aldershot, Hampshire joined the Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme in May 2021. She is 47 and has two adult children and one new grandson. She is now in the last six months of the programme and has agreed to share her experience with us.
Can you tell us about your life before the programme?
I led a very sedentary lifestyle, except for walking my dog each morning. I was tired, extremely overweight and had been steadily gaining weight through the Covid pandemic.
How did you hear about the Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme?
I contacted my doctor to request assistance with my weight. My doctor performed a blood test which then revealed I had type 2 diabetes and she suggested I try this programme.
What has been your experience on the programme so far?
From the very first day I’ve had excellent support on the programme. I was ready mentally at the beginning and found the first eight weeks very easy. I never wavered from the programme and lost a significant amount of weight. I think this final stage, weight maintenance, is harder as I am trying to make sure I don’t slip back into bad habits and I want to maintain my current weight.
How has the programme fitted into your life?
My family have been very supportive, and I haven’t had many challenges. The hardest bit for me was when a family member, who we hadn’t seen for three years, visited from the US. Everyone around me was celebrating, eating, and drinking, I couldn’t join in but because I was feeling so much better and able to see the weight loss on the scales, that was enough to get me through.
How has the programme improved your health and your life?
So far, I have lost 23kgs during the programme! I lost some weight before the start as my doctor advised me to stop drinking and to start eating more healthily. I have dropped from a dress size 20/22 to 14/16 and I feel amazing! I’ve bought a couple of dresses which is something I’ve not done in decades! I’ve taken up knitting in the evening which helps to prevent me from nibbling. I am no longer tired, and I don’t snooze all weekend which I used to do. My friends and family have noticed the difference in me. I generally feel much more positive and am grateful for the programme.
What would you say to someone considering joining the programme?
I absolutely would recommend this to anyone who has been diagnosed with the Type 2 diabetes. My diabetes is now in remission and my cholesterol has also gone down significantly. My advice is to get yourself in the right mindset from the start. I remember feeling very excited that I would lose a significant amount of weight within a few months and kept taking pictures to look at the progress. I have learnt how to eat sensibly and will take that with me when the programme ends. I feel like I have my life back!
