Ruth’s story to beat Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that often requires the use of anti-diabetic medication, or insulin to keep blood sugar levels under control. However, the occurrence of type 2 diabetes and its side effects can be prevented if recognised early on.

We have a number of Diabetes Prevention Programmes nationwide set up to support members through the process of preventing development of Type 2 diabetes. We often hear about the fantastic life changes our members have experienced. One of our lovely members, Ruth, shares her story and results with us.

How long have you been on the Diabetes Prevention Programme?

I have been on the pre-diabetes course for the last 10 weeks with Augusta and Sue taking this course, at Ealing Park Health Centre.

What was the best part of the Diabetes Prevention Programme for you?

The course has transformed the way I look at food and how I eat now. I have found it very easy to adjust my diet and the support I received on the course helped me so much to do this.

How did you find the support groups?

I really enjoyed the support groups, they were so informative and Augusta and Sue were brilliant at explaining all the information being very patient with us all. They made it fun always making time to answer our many questions. I looked forward to the session every week.

Would you recommend the programme to others?

My hope is that more people come to understand about simple carbohydrates and how they are affecting our bodies and health. I am already spreading the word, but people seem to be unready to take this new science on board as we have all been indoctrinated into thinking we need simple carbohydrates. I will press on regardless, and hope the government continue funding this programme.

Ruth’s story

I have always been interested in healthy eating, I had no idea the impact simple carbohydrates had on my health. I have lost 4.5 kg during this course; and I no longer have pre-diabetes symptoms.

If you feel you could be at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and feel you would benefit from our Health & Wellbeing programme contact the team today to help you find a centre near you. It is never too late to make a change.
